INTELLIGENT PEOPLE STAY UP LATE, DO MORE DRUGS AND HAVE MORE SEX - RESEARCH

By Steven Bancarz|  What is the mark of an intelligent mind in our day and age?  When we think of intelligent people, we may have been conditioned to envision them in a library somewhere studying.  We associate intelligence with social reservation and good behaviour.
But what if the opposite were true?  What if the ones who are most intelligent are engaging in behaviours grandma and grandpa wouldn’t approve of?  Times have changed, and people who have a higher intelligence aren’t always interested in studying and following the rules.
This may sound a bit shocking, but a series of studies have come out showing that intelligent people stay up later, do more drugs, and have more sex. The people in our society who have the highest IQs are noctural and enjoy indulging in drugs and sex more often than people with a lower IQ.
Here is a list of the three studies that should completely change the way we think about intelligence and behaviour:

1) Intelligent People Are Night Owls

In a study published in Personality and Individual Differencesresearchers proposed the hypothesis that people who are of high intelligence will be drawn to evolutionarily novel behaviours.  Novel behaviours (new behaviours) are thought to be evolutionary advantageous because they expand our problem solving ability and provide us with new knowledge we can use to improve our lives.  It’s kind of like nature’s way of pushing itself to evolve and create something new.
They found that intelligent people are not only more likely to be liberal and free thinkers, they are also more likely to have different circadian rhythms (sleep cycles).
The study found that people with high childhood and adulthood IQs went to bed about half an hour later each night than people of normal intelligence, and 30 minutes later than people of lower intellectual ability.  They also wake up later by about the same margains as well.  This was true of both weekends and weekdays.
As the study concludes:
Survey of ethnographies of traditional societies suggests that nocturnal activities were probably rare in the ancestral environment, so the Hypothesis would predict that more intelligent individuals are more likely to be nocturnal than less intelligent individuals. The analysis of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) confirms the prediction.

The correlation from the study was very clear.  The higher the IQ, the later they tend to stay up.  And these results were concluded from a sample of over 20,000 people. If you or your children have a habit of staying up late and can’t seem to break it, that could actually be a good thing.  Instead of trying to force yourself to go to bed “on time”, use that time to do something creative.

2) Intelligent People Do More Drugs

Intelligent people aren’t just night owls, they also seem to be more into experimenting with drugs.  Sounds crazy right?  It didn’t make sense at first to me either.  Some of the least intelligent people I have ever met smoke and drink way too much.  But on average, if you have a higher IQ, you are more likely to experiment with drugs.
A National Child Development study reported on in Psychology Today, people who have high IQs both in childhood and adulthood are much more likely to experiment with psychoactive drugs than people with low IQs.  Why? Because psychoactive drugs are evolutionarily novel and different from the general behaviour of our ancestors.
According this study which was published in the UK in 2010:
Net of sex, religion, religiosity, marital status, number of children, education, earnings, depression, satisfaction with life, social class at birth, mother’s education, and father’s education, British children who are more intelligent before the age of 16 are more likely to consume psychoactive drugs at age 42 than less intelligent children.
…there is a clear monotonic association between childhood general intelligence and adult consumption of psychoactive drugs. “Very bright” individuals (with IQs above 125) are roughly three-tenths of a standard deviation more likely to consume psychoactive drugs than “very dull” individuals (with IQs below 75).

Another study published in 2011 in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that people who scored high in intelligent tests as children were much more likely to experiment with illegal drugs in their adulthood, especially cannabis.  Another study published in 2012 came upon the exact same discovery that intelligent children were more likely to use cannabis, amphetamines, and magic mushrooms later in life.

3) Intelligent People Have More Sex

Additionally, researchers in the UK  found that students studying at universities such as Oxford and Cambridge spent more money on sex toys than at other universities. “The correlation probably has something to do with the open-mindedness that comes with intelligence,” says Annalisa Rose, 23, who works at LoveHoney, a high-end sex shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
“I think that the ability to engage in an open sex life comes with the abilities of introspection and logical thought, and those require some level of intelligence. If we’re talking about an open sex life that comes from an emotionally healthy place, sexual morals are mostly made up anyway and intelligent people can rationalize past them…High-achievers aim for excellence in all areas of their life, so it makes sense that achieving sexual happiness is one of their goals.”
This is quite the significant sociological finding.  Students studying at the worlds most elite universities also spend the most money on sex toys.  It also appears that the more prestigious the university, the more students have sex.  These findings which were reported on The Telegraph have sparked speculation that high intelligence might be correlated with an increased sex drive.
Here is a list the top 5 Universities that spend the most amount of money on sex toys per year:
1) Cambridge £9,793
2) Oxford £9,689
3) Manchester £5,441
4) Lancaster £4,103
5) York £3,751

What does this all mean?

Correlation does not imply causation.  This does not mean that staying up late, doing drugs, and experimenting with sex toys makes you more intelligent.  But it seems to be the case that people who naturally have a higher degree of intelligence partake in these activities naturally because they are drawn to them.  Maybe it is because of their openmindedness, their desire to expand their mind and their experience, or a biological urge to experiment with something novel.
Chances are, a lot of people reading this tend to stay up late and indulge in life’s pleasures.  This is not necessarily a bad thing, and it may even be a natural consequence of having an above average IQ.  These three studies completely shatter everything we would expect to be true about people of high intelligence.  It seems to be the intellectuals that are having the most fun.  I think it’s time we let go of old stereotypes.

THE SHAMANIC VIEW OF MENTAL ILLNESS - when the person does not get assistance in dealing with the presence of the energy from the spirit realm

..." when the person does not get assistance in dealing with the presence of the energy from the spirit realm"

In the shamanic view, mental illness signals “the birth of a healer,” explains Malidoma Patrice Somé. Thus, mental disorders are spiritual emergencies, spiritual crises, and need to be regarded as such to aid the healer in being born.
What those in the West view as mental illness, the Dagara people regard as “good news from the other world.” The person going through the crisis has been chosen as a medium for a message to the community that needs to be communicated from the spirit realm. “Mental disorder, behavioral disorder of all kinds, signal the fact that two obviously incompatible energies have merged into the same field,”says Dr. Somé. These disturbances result when the person does not get assistance in dealing with the presence of the energy from the spirit realm.
One of the things Dr. Somé encountered when he first came to the United States in 1980 for graduate study was how this country deals with mental illness. When a fellow student was sent to a mental institute due to “nervous depression,” Dr. Somé went to visit him.
“I was so shocked. That was the first time I was brought face to face with what is done here to people exhibiting the same symptoms I’ve seen in my village.” What struck Dr. Somé was that the attention given to such symptoms was based on pathology, on the idea that the condition is something that needs to stop. This was in complete opposition to the way his culture views such a situation. As he looked around the stark ward at the patients, some in straitjackets, some zoned out on medications, others screaming, he observed to himself, “So this is how the healers who are attempting to be born are treated in this culture. What a loss! What a loss that a person who is finally being aligned with a power from the other world is just being wasted.”
Another way to say this, which may make more sense to the Western mind, is that we in the West are not trained in how to deal or even taught to acknowledge the existence of psychic phenomena, the spiritual world. In fact, psychic abilities are denigrated. When energies from the spiritual world emerge in a Western psyche, that individual is completely unequipped to integrate them or even recognize what is happening. The result can be terrifying. Without the proper context for and assistance in dealing with the breakthrough from another level of reality, for all practical purposes, the person is insane. Heavy dosing with anti-psychotic drugs compounds the problem and prevents the integration that could lead to soul development and growth in the individual who has received these energies.
On the mental ward, Dr Somé saw a lot of “beings”hanging around the patients, “entities” that are invisible to most people but that shamans and psychics are able to see. “They were causing the crisis in these people,” he says. It appeared to him that these beings were trying to get the medications and their effects out of the bodies of the people the beings were trying to merge with, and were increasing the patients’ pain in the process. “The beings were acting almost like some kind of excavator in the energy field of people. They were really fierce about that. The people they were doing that to were just screaming and yelling,” he said. He couldn’t stay in that environment and had to leave.
In the Dagara tradition, the community helps the person reconcile the energies of both worlds–”the world of the spirit that he or she is merged with, and the village and community.” That person is able then to serve as a bridge between the worlds and help the living with information and healing they need. Thus, the spiritual crisis ends with the birth of another healer. “The other world’s relationship with our world is one of sponsorship,” Dr. Somé explains. “More often than not, the knowledge and skills that arise from this kind of merger are a knowledge or a skill that is provided directly from the other world.”
The beings who were increasing the pain of the inmates on the mental hospital ward were actually attempting to merge with the inmates in order to get messages through to this world. The people they had chosen to merge with were getting no assistance in learning how to be a bridge between the worlds and the beings’ attempts to merge were thwarted. The result was the sustaining of the initial disorder of energy and the aborting of the birth of a healer.
“The Western culture has consistently ignored the birth of the healer,” states Dr. Somé. “Consequently, there will be a tendency from the other world to keep trying as many people as possible in an attempt to get somebody’s attention. They have to try harder.” The spirits are drawn to people whose senses have not been anesthetized. “The sensitivity is pretty much read as an invitation to come in,” he notes.
Those who develop so-called mental disorders are those who are sensitive, which is viewed in Western culture as oversensitivity. Indigenous cultures don’t see it that way and, as a result, sensitive people don’t experience themselves as overly sensitive. In the West, “it is the overload of the culture they’re in that is just wrecking them,” observes Dr. Somé. The frenetic pace, the bombardment of the senses, and the violent energy that characterize Western culture can overwhelm sensitive people.

SCHIZOPHRENIA AND FOREIGN ENERGY

With schizophrenia, there is a special “receptivity to a flow of images and information, which cannot be controlled,” stated Dr. Somé. “When this kind of rush occurs at a time that is not personally chosen, and particularly when it comes with images that are scary and contradictory, the person goes into a frenzy.”
What is required in this situation is first to separate the person’s energy from the extraneous foreign energies, by using shamanic practice (what is known as a “sweep”) to clear the latter out of the individual’s aura. With the clearing of their energy field, the person no longer picks up a flood of information and so no longer has a reason to be scared and disturbed, explains Dr. Somé.
Then it is possible to help the person align with the energy of the spirit being attempting to come through from the other world and give birth to the healer. The blockage of that emergence is what creates problems. “The energy of the healer is a high-voltage energy,” he observes. “When it is blocked, it just burns up the person. It’s like a short-circuit. Fuses are blowing. This is why it can be really scary, and I understand why this culture prefers to confine these people. Here they are yelling and screaming, and they’re put into a straitjacket. That’s a sad image.” Again, the shamanic approach is to work on aligning the energies so there is no blockage, “fuses” aren’t blowing, and the person can become the healer they are meant to be.
It needs to be noted at this point, however, that not all of the spirit beings that enter a person’s energetic field are there for the purposes of promoting healing. There are negative energies as well, which are undesirable presences in the aura. In those cases, the shamanic approach is to remove them from the aura, rather than work to align the discordant energies

ALEX: CRAZY IN THE USA, HEALER IN AFRICA

To test his belief that the shamanic view of mental illness holds true in the Western world as well as in indigenous cultures, Dr. Somé took a mental patient back to Africa with him, to his village. “I was prompted by my own curiosity to find out whether there’s truth in the universality that mental illness could be connected with an alignment with a being from another world,” says Dr. Somé.
Alex was an 18-year-old American who had suffered a psychotic break when he was 14. He had hallucinations, was suicidal, and went through cycles of dangerously severe depression. He was in a mental hospital and had been given a lot of drugs, but nothing was helping. “The parents had done everything–unsuccessfully,” says Dr. Somé. “They didn’t know what else to do.”
With their permission, Dr. Somé took their son to Africa. “After eight months there, Alex had become quite normal, Dr. Somé reports. He was even able to participate with healers in the business of healing; sitting with them all day long and helping them, assisting them in what they were doing with their clients . . . . He spent about four years in my village.” Alex stayed by choice, not because he needed more healing. He felt, “much safer in the village than in America.”
To bring his energy and that of the being from the spiritual realm into alignment, Alex went through a shamanic ritual designed for that purpose, although it was slightly different from the one used with the Dagara people. “He wasn’t born in the village, so something else applied. But the result was similar, even though the ritual was not literally the same,” explains Dr. Somé. The fact that aligning the energy worked to heal Alex demonstrated to Dr. Somé that the connection between other beings and mental illness is indeed universal.
After the ritual, Alex began to share the messages that the spirit being had for this world. Unfortunately, the people he was talking to didn’t speak English (Dr. Somé was away at that point). The whole experience led, however, to Alex’s going to college to study psychology. He returned to the United States after four years because “he discovered that all the things that he needed to do had been done, and he could then move on with his life.”
The last that Dr. Somé heard was that Alex was in graduate school in psychology at Harvard. No one had thought he would ever be able to complete undergraduate studies, much less get an advanced degree.
Dr. Somé sums up what Alex’s mental illness was all about: “He was reaching out. It was an emergency call. His job and his purpose was to be a healer. He said no one was paying attention to that.”
After seeing how well the shamanic approach worked for Alex, Dr. Somé concluded that spirit beings are just as much an issue in the West as in his community in Africa. “Yet the question still remains, the answer to this problem must be found here, instead of having to go all the way overseas to seek the answer. There has to be a way in which a little bit of attention beyond the pathology of this whole experience leads to the possibility of coming up with the proper ritual to help people.

LONGING FOR SPIRITUAL CONNECTION

A common thread that Dr. Somé has noticed in “mental” disorders in the West is “a very ancient ancestral energy that has been placed in stasis, that finally is coming out in the person.” His job then is to trace it back, to go back in time to discover what that spirit is. In most cases, the spirit is connected to nature, especially with mountains or big rivers, he says.
In the case of mountains, as an example to explain the phenomenon, “it’s a spirit of the mountain that is walking side by side with the person and, as a result, creating a time-space distortion that is affecting the person caught in it.” What is needed is a merger or alignment of the two energies, “so the person and the mountain spirit become one.” Again, the shaman conducts a specific ritual to bring about this alignment.
Dr. Somé believes that he encounters this situation so often in the United States because “most of the fabric of this country is made up of the energy of the machine, and the result of that is the disconnection and the severing of the past. You can run from the past, but you can’t hide from it.” The ancestral spirit of the natural world comes visiting. “It’s not so much what the spirit wants as it is what the person wants,”he says. “The spirit sees in us a call for something grand, something that will make life meaningful, and so the spirit is responding to that.”
That call, which we don’t even know we are making, reflects “a strong longing for a profound connection, a connection that transcends materialism and possession of things and moves into a tangible cosmic dimension. Most of this longing is unconscious, but for spirits, conscious or unconscious doesn’t make any difference.” They respond to either.
As part of the ritual to merge the mountain and human energy, those who are receiving the“mountain energy” are sent to a mountain area of their choice, where they pick up a stone that calls to them. They bring that stone back for the rest of the ritual and then keep it as a companion; some even carry it around with them. “The presence of the stone does a lot in tuning the perceptive ability of the person,” notes Dr. Somé. “They receive all kinds of information that they can make use of, so it’s like they get some tangible guidance from the other world as to how to live their life.”
When it is the “river energy,” those being called go to the river and, after speaking to the river spirit, find a water stone to bring back for the same kind of ritual as with the mountain spirit.
“People think something extraordinary must be done in an extraordinary situation like this,” he says. That’s not usually the case. Sometimes it is as simple as carrying a stone.

A SACRED RITUAL APPROACH TO MENTAL ILLNESS

One of the gifts a shaman can bring to the Western world is to help people rediscover ritual, which is so sadly lacking. “The abandonment of ritual can be devastating. From the spiritual view, ritual is inevitable and necessary if one is to live,” Dr. Somé writes in Ritual: Power, Healing, and Community.“To say that ritual is needed in the industrialized world is an understatement. We have seen in my own people that it is probably impossible to live a sane life without it.”
Dr. Somé did not feel that the rituals from his traditional village could simply be transferred to the West, so over his years of shamanic work here, he has designed rituals that meet the very different needs of this culture. Although the rituals change according to the individual or the group involved, he finds that there is a need for certain rituals in general.
One of these involves helping people discover that their distress is coming from the fact that they are “called by beings from the other world to cooperate with them in doing healing work.” Ritual allows them to move out of the distress and accept that calling.
Another ritual need relates to initiation. In indigenous cultures all over the world, young people are initiated into adulthood when they reach a certain age. The lack of such initiation in the West is part of the crisis that people are in here, says Dr. Somé. He urges communities to bring together “the creative juices of people who have had this kind of experience, in an attempt to come up with some kind of an alternative ritual that would at least begin to put a dent in this kind of crisis.”
Another ritual that repeatedly speaks to the needs of those coming to him for help entails making a bonfire, and then putting into the bonfire “items that are symbolic of issues carried inside the individuals . . . It might be the issues of anger and frustration against an ancestor who has left a legacy of murder and enslavement or anything, things that the descendant has to live with,” he explains. “If these are approached as things that are blocking the human imagination, the person’s life purpose, and even the person’s view of life as something that can improve, then it makes sense to begin thinking in terms of how to turn that blockage into a roadway that can lead to something more creative and more fulfilling.”
The example of issues with an ancestors touches on rituals designed by Dr. Somé that address a serious dysfunction in Western society and in the process “trigger enlightenment” in participants. These are ancestral rituals, and the dysfunction they are aimed at is the mass turning-of-the-back on ancestors. Some of the spirits trying to come through, as described earlier, may be “ancestors who want to merge with a descendant in an attempt to heal what they weren’t able to do while in their physical body.”
“Unless the relationship between the living and the dead is in balance, chaos ensues,” he says. “The Dagara believe that, if such an imbalance exists, it is the duty of the living to heal their ancestors. If these ancestors are not healed, their sick energy will haunt the souls and psyches of those who are responsible for helping them.” The rituals focus on healing the relationship with our ancestors, both specific issues of an individual ancestor and the larger cultural issues contained in our past. Dr. Somé has seen extraordinary healing occur at these rituals.
Taking a sacred ritual approach to mental illness rather than regarding the person as a pathological case gives the person affected–and indeed the community at large–the opportunity to begin looking at it from that vantage point too, which leads to “a whole plethora of opportunities and ritual initiative that can be very, very beneficial to everyone present,” states. Dr. Somé.

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR PERSONAL YEAR NUMBER

This is the newsletter you have been waiting for - the one
that tells you the meaning of each personal year (i.e. each phase of your 9 year cycle).
Once again the calculation for figuring out your personal year
is very simple.
It is your BIRTHDAY plus the MONTH you were born plus the
CURRENT YEAR.
For instance my birthday is June 7, 1960 and I want to see
what the trends are for the year 2014. The first part of the
calculation would be 6 + 7 = 13. This equals 4.
I then reduce the year 2014 to 7(2+0+1+4=7).
4 and 7 equals 11, and 1+1=2, so my Personal year for 2014 is 2.
Interpretations of the Numbers
Personal Year 1:
Planting Seeds, Rebirth, Beginning of An Era
This is the beginning of a new nine year cycle. Things that
have concerned you for the past decade no longer matter at
all, in fact you may find your priorities have changed
altogether. Disappointments from the past simply don't matter
anymore. Any work that you do during this year sets the tone
and foundation for the next nine. This is the time to decide
what your goals are and act on them. A personal year 1 also
often brings new vitality and physical strength.

Personal Year 2:
Nurturing, Development, Waiting For The Right Moment
This is a time during which the seeds of change you have planted during a year 1 cycle start to grow. Ideas or attempts to change can be compared to seeds that are nurtured in darkness and just pushing their tendrils up through the soil.
A year 2 is all about patience. It is a year that you should spend
finding new allies and kindred spirits and making any necessary
personal changes that might be acting as obstacles to your success.
Many people find the year 2 to be challenging as it is often filled with obstacles and delays but by the end any trials you experience will only refine your best qualities.

Personal Year 3:
Blossoming, Expansion, Personal and Business Success
This is a very happy year during which you see your efforts
begin to show fruit. You can expect delightful surprises and
gratification in many areas of your life including business,
career, friends and love. You exude such enthusiasm for life
that others may find you irresistible. Usually during a year
3 you also find that the burden of responsibility is somehow
lifted off your shoulders. The only drawback of this year is
that it presents you with so many great opportunities that
you might be tempted to take on more than you can handle.

Personal Year 4:
Maintenance, Work, Self Control and Responsibility
This is a year of hard work and discipline in which you will
be struggling to keep up with all the promises you made
during year 3. Many find a year 4 to be very frustrating as
responsibilities increase. A common metaphor used to describe
this year is "one step forward and two steps back." Although it might seem that you are not making much headway, the whole point of a year four is to create a firm foundation that can support the maturing of your life goals over the next couple of years.

Personal Year 5:
Independence, Freedom, Connecting To Others
This year positive opportunities may present themselves on
all fronts. Many of the obstacles from previous years seem to
slip away. Your hard work is rewarded with more personal
freedom and a break from restrictive routines. Travel,
adventure or additional education might be part of the
overall picture. This year is also good for pursuing new
employment opportunities or making new friends. You could
also change residence. A drawback of this year is that it
can make you feel like not working much or bring a tendency
to shirk responsibility.
Personal Year 6:
Finding A Soul Mate, Love, Family and Home
A personal year 6 intensifies feelings in existing
relationships and enables you to make new emotional
connections. Many people find a soul mate during this phase.
You are most likely to get married or engaged during this
harmonious year. Although this can be a wonderful experience
it can also be sobering, as it often presents a choice:
to make a commitment or not. You may also prefer to
spend more time with family or an intimate circle of friends.
A friend that you meet during this cycle is likely to become
a friend for life.

Personal Year 7:
Reflection, Learning, Self Analysis
Even if you have a reputation as an extrovert, a year 7 is
likely to put you in the mood to be alone. You may feel like
pursuing your interests, travelling or finding a way to
escape from business pressures. A year 7 is like a coccooning
stage for the psyche, in which you analyze, reflect and try
to shed any behaviors, relationships or patterns that may be
preventing your personal growth. This year also favors any
kind of self-improvement including surgical operations,
seeking counseling, therapy or seeking higher education.

Personal Year 8:
Health, Wealth and Abundance
This is a potent year that usually gives all aspects of your
life a big positive boost but it especially favors your
career and money matters. This is a good year to buy a new
home, find a new job or put a business plan into action.
While you are in a year 8 others find you more attractive and
charismatic and many people find themselves thrust into a
position of great authority or power during 8's influence. If
you focus on making money, you more than likely will during
this prosperous cycle.

Personal Year 9:
Death, Taking Personal Inventory, The End of an Era
The number 9 year is one of completion and marks the
beginning of the ending of everything you have managed to
accomplish during the last decade. This is an uncomfortable
year for many individuals, especially if they are unable to
embrace change. You may feel restless and things that used to
interest you may be replaced by new desires. If you are not
able to let go of the past willingly, a situation may
manifest that forces you to change. This is the year you reap
what you sow.
Now that you have learned how to calculate your personal year,
you're about to learn a very sophisticated numerology calculation that is usually only used by professionals. This is called the Life Cycle Number. The Life Cycle Number incorporates the calculation of the Personal Year Number and integrates it with three 28-year cycles to give you an idea of the influences governing an individual's early, adult and later years.
Until next time...

How will the Number 8 impact your wallet in 2015?

WATCH THIS VIDEO - THE MEANING OF NUMBER 8 IN THIS YEAR

2015 just might be the happiest & most abundant year of your life.

Here’s why…
2015 is an 8 Universal Year. This is calculated by adding up all the digits of the year (2+0+1+5=8)!
It’s important for you to understand the Universal Year Number because it represents a vibrational pattern you can’t avoid.
So, what does an 8 Universal Year mean for YOU in 2015?
Big (and I mean BIG) things because 8 is the number of Infinite Abundance. Ka-Ching!
Watch my quick video below where I reveal a simple 5-step ‘Numerology trick’ for harnessing this year’s powerful Universal energy and turning yourself into an unstoppable money magnet…

The number 8 is perhaps the most misunderstood of all single-digit numbers, as novices and professionals alike always seem to hammer on the "money and power" image of the 8. More often than not, when a client requests a name change consultation, it means he or she wants to add 8s to his or her chart in the mistaken belief that it will bring money and power.
It is true that the number 8, more than any other number, puts the emphasis in the areas of career, business, finances and authority. However, as with many other single-digit numbers, the shape of the number reflects its most important attribute, and in the case of the number 8, that is, first and foremost, balance. The 8 is the great Karmic equalizer, a force that just as easily creates as it destroys. When the 8 comes knocking, you can be assured that you will reap what you've sown.
The 8 balances the material and immaterial worlds. At its best, it is as spiritual as it is materialistic. The spiritual side of the 8 is practical, realistic and intelligent. It knows the difference between make-believe and genuine spiritual realizations. On the material plane, it is focused on results, often in the form of money, yet does not care much about money for the sake of money. It is not greedy, it sees money as a tool, not an end-result. It is generous and willing to take risks. People with strong 8s in their charts often make and lose fortunes a couple of times during their life. They never consider bankruptcy a reason to slow down or feel sorry, but, rather, come out stronger and more success-oriented than before.
Some of the more recognizable traits of the 8 are drive, ambition, authority, efficiency, organization, management, discipline and control. The 8 is goal-oriented, focused, has good judgment, can discriminate and is practical, a realist. Its closest relative is the 1 as both numbers are powerful, have strong leadership skills, are unquestionably masculine and will not shy away from a confrontation. However, where the 1 lacks diplomatic skills and an understanding of human nature -- more typically the traits of the 2 -- the 8 has those abilities as well, which is perhaps the most important reason the 8 tends to do well in business and in authority roles (the military and law enforcement draw a lot of 8s).
When the 8 appears in your personality profile chart, it indicates the presence of the character traits mentioned earlier, as well as the potential to be very successful and prosperous -- hence the reason so many people like to manipulate their charts to add one or more 8s. However, the energy of the 8 needs to be supported by other numbers in order to flourish, such as the 4to help you keep an eye on the all-important details, and the 9 to keep you in touch with your humanity. So be careful what you ask for. If you decide to change your name to add one or more 8s to your chart, and the rest of your chart does not support this strong force, you may come to inherit more of its negative powers like frustration, dissatisfaction, anger, aggression, greed, intolerance, hate and insomnia. A higher-than-average percentage of 8s find their way into the top echelons of society, but you will also find a disproportionate number of 8s among the homeless.
If the 8 appears in your cycles, especially your Essence cycle, there is an increase in energy and focus, a sense of "can do," and enhanced self-confidence. The shape of the 8 shows balance, but it also shows confidence, as it looks you right in the eye. A positive 8 is honest to a fault, generous and forgiving. They are physically imposing and often athletic, especially good in sports requiring strength and endurance. They are not particularly romantic, as they prefer a practical and straight-forward approach, but they are loving and more than carry their weight.
As with all single-digit numbers, the 8 has a positive and a negative side. However, one of the mysteries of Numerology is that there is a small number of people who, from an early age on and for no discernible reason, seem to turn the exact opposite direction of what their charts indicate. The key word here is "seem." This phenomena is found with all numbers, but appears to affect 8s more than others. There are quite a few people whose charts are dominated with 8s who become priests, missionaries, humanitarians and so forth, but those sacrificing and loving souls do still tend to be good at fundraising, money management and authority.
